Sometimes it may feel as though you brought home Cujo instead of Lassie! Fortunately for you, it only takes a little fundamental training to shape up your dog’s behavior in the near future.
Avoid reinforcing negative behavior. This means denying your dog treats and praise whenever it misbehaves. If they jump on you, don’t pet them, for example.
When you meet an unfamiliar dog, you should go up to him slowly and allow him to sniff your hand. He’ll learn your scent and begin to have trust. After the dog knows your scent, he is unlikely to fear you and may be more willing to heed your command.
Be patient when training a dog. You will not get frustrated or mad and neither will your pet. Keep in mind that they wish to please you; however, they get confused because they can’t understand your language.
“Leave it” is a command that should be taught and reinforced early on. Teaching them to “leave it” will stop them from destructive chewing and coming in contact with something that could potentially hurt them.
When training your dog, use discretion and regard for your dog’s attention span. You will bore your dog if your spend a lot of time on just one thing. Try to limit initial training sessions to 10 minutes or less.
Expect mistakes and setbacks when housebreaking a puppy. Get rid of accidents immediately to improve training efficiency. Urine and feces smells will stay in the carpet if you don’t clean them up straight away, causing your dog to go back to the same place to do his business. You can buy a spray or carpet shampoo that will remove the odor.
In order to train a puppy to a leash, you must first place a collar around its neck during play. Making sure your new dog is comfortable with a collar is important, particularly if you want to take them on walks and have some sort of identification tags for them to carry.
As with most things, and this goes with canine training as well, don’t ever give up. Your dog will need constant reinforcement, otherwise the behaviors and actions you have taught it may be lost. Taking care of your dog must include instituting a training plan, as well as meeting his food and shelter needs.
When training your dog, it is important to remember to keep the training sessions relatively short. About 15 minutes is enough time to train because spending longer than that can irritate your dog and hinder their progress. After each training session spend some time playing with your dog and lavish him with praise.
Does you dog eat an appropriate diet? Dogs are like children in the sense that bad diets lead to them acting bratty and hyperactive. Find out what type of nutrition your dog’s breed requires and adjust his diet accordingly; doing this will help your dog maintain his energy level. Talk to your dog’s vet to make sure there aren’t any other issues.
Patience can be hard, but it is necessary with puppy training. Your dog is not human and doesn’t know English. They just pick up on body language and tone without understanding why you might be acting that way. If you find you are getting frustrated to the point where you cannot stay calm, take a break from training.
Don’t send mixed signals to your dog when he misbehaves. If you’re acting amused while your pet is behaving badly, he may think his behavior is good. This will set back your training schedule and lead to frustration on your end. Even if your dog is entertaining when he misbehaves, he must be corrected consistently.
Realize the limitations of an older dog. Older pooches may not be perfectly and easily trainable. You may have to embrace some of their quirks. Keep in mind that older dogs tend to have ingrained routines already. It’s possible for them to learn new tricks, but it’s best to eliminate the negative behaviors that can be altered and get used to the other ones.
Try using a crate if you’re house training a dog. Crate training is most effective when you allow your dog out using a consistent schedule. Soon you’ll find that your crate-trained dog will have learned to avoid inside accidents.
When you begin training your dog consider using more than one type of treat as a reward. Using treats that your dog does not usually receive help to convey they message that your training sessions are special.
